RSC-1 Vice Chairperson Atty. Shelia De Guzman, PSA Regional Director, delivered the RSC-1 Message, on behalf of the RSC-1 Chair, RD Nestor G. Rillon, of NEDA Region 1

Region 1 through the Regional Statistics Committee (RSC) of Regional Development Council 1 (RDC 1) officially ended the month-long celebration of the 33rd National Statistics Month (NSM) with the closing ceremony at Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Office 1 on October 28, 2022 but the use of statistics continues as the region pushes for economic recovery. This year’s theme, “NSM@33: Boosting the Country’s Recovery with Informed Decisions, Better Policies”, highlights the importance of informed decisions and better policies in the country’s socio-economic recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The month-long activity kicked-off with the conduct of the jingle singing contest participated in by secondary and tertiary levels from different schools in Region 1 during the opening ceremony  last October 10, 2022. Various regional line agencies, local government units, academic institutions, and private sector, participated in the 33rd NSM celebration through media blast activities, hanging of streamers, and various NSM contests at the provincial and regional levels. The RSC-1 members also conducted a community immersion and social responsibility activity as they provided construction materials for the repair of earthquake-damaged houses in Brgy. Aguioas, Naguilian, La Union last October 26, 2022. Meanwhile, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) conducted  a Virtual Statistical Symposium on  the statistics-related reports in the region on October 28, 2022.

Various competitions were held to further promote awareness on the significance of statistics across the region. The winners were awarded during the closing ceremony. The Province of La Union emerged as the 33rd NSM Best Province Implementer and the champion in the 1st Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) Awards. The participants from La Union also won the Jingle Singing Contest and Oratorical Contest for secondary and tertiary levels, Essay Writing Contest employee level, and Statistics Quiz for secondary level.

The Province of Pangasinan bagged the 1st runner- up for both the 33rd NSM Best Province Implementer and the 1st PSC Awards. The participants from Pangasinan also won the Statistics Quiz for tertiary level, and Poster-Slogan Making Contest for secondary and tertiary levels. Meanwhile, the secondary level participant from Ilocos Sur won the Essay Writing Contest. 

The Province of La Union awarded as the champion for both 1st PSC Awards and 33rd NSM Best Province Implementer Award.

“The pandemic may have posed various challenges but it has become an opportunity for us to analyze various strategies attuned to the call of times.” This was the message of NEDA Regional Director Nestor G. Rillon, RSC Chairperson, read by Atty. Sheila O. De Guzman, RSC Vice-Chairperson,  during the closing ceremony. The message reminded everyone that the Covid-19 pandemic has magnified the role of statistics that while looking at the number of cases, infections, and deaths, among others, we see ourselves looking for evidence-based solutions to mitigate adverse effects.
